Gas vs. Electric: How Repairs Differ

Orange County homes have a roughly even split of gas and electric ranges. Each type fails in different ways and requires different parts and training to fix safely.

🔥 Gas Oven & Range

Gas failures are usually mechanical: a worn igniter that can't generate enough heat to open the gas valve, a clogged burner port, or a failed gas valve coil. Gas repairs also require a safety check: we verify there are no leaks before and after every service. If you smell gas at any time, turn off the supply at the shutoff valve and call us or your gas company immediately.

⚡ Electric Oven & Range

Electric failures are usually electrical: a burned-out bake or broil element, a failed temperature sensor giving the control board false readings, or a control board fault that shows as an error code. Smooth-top (glass-ceramic) cooktops can also crack from thermal shock or impact. Most electric repairs are completed in a single visit with parts from our service vehicle.

Gas Stove & Range Repairs in Orange County

Beyond oven failures, gas stove and range problems make up a large share of our kitchen repair calls. The three most common are igniter failures, burner port clogs, and cooktop glass damage, each with a distinct set of symptoms that points directly to the repair needed.

Igniter Not Working

A burner that clicks but won't light almost always comes down to food debris on the ceramic igniter tip or moisture from cleaning reaching the igniter housing. Clean the tip with a dry toothbrush and reseat the burner cap. If it still won't light, the igniter switch (one burner silent) or spark module (all burners silent or clicking continuously) needs replacement. See the full igniter guide.

Burner Not Lighting After Cleaning

This is the most avoidable call we receive. Water from stovetop cleaning gets into the igniter assembly and prevents it from sparking. The fix in most cases is simply drying it out: keep the range off, let it air out for 30 minutes, or run the oven on the lowest setting briefly to warm the interior. Reseating the burner cap is the second step. See the step-by-step fix.

Gas and electric ranges also differ significantly in repair cost. An igniter switch on a gas range runs $100 to $250 parts and labor; a surface element on an electric range runs $75 to $200. Control board replacements cost $350 to $750 on most brands, and notably more on luxury brands. Compare gas vs. electric repair costs for the most common failures.

Repair or Replace Your Oven or Range?

Ovens and ranges last 15 to 20 years, significantly longer than most other appliances. A quality freestanding range runs $800–$2,500 new; premium brands like Viking or Wolf range from $4,000 to $10,000+. At those prices, repair almost always wins unless the appliance is very old and multiple components have failed simultaneously.

Our rule of thumb: If the repair is under 50% of replacement cost and the oven is under 12 years old, fix it. For premium brands like Viking, Wolf, or Thermador, repair makes financial sense up to about 20 years, as the cost of a new unit is that much higher. We'll give you an honest assessment and let you decide.

Oven, Stove & Range Repair: FAQs

The most common causes are a failed bake element (electric), a weak or cracked igniter (gas), a faulty temperature sensor, or a malfunctioning control board. If your oven takes more than 20 minutes to preheat or consistently runs hotter or cooler than set, a calibration test or sensor replacement will usually fix it in one visit.
Continuous clicking without ignition is almost always a wet or dirty igniter, a clogged burner cap, or a failed spark module. After spills, food debris under the burner cap blocks the gas path. Remove the grate, clean around the igniter tip and burner ports, and dry thoroughly. If clicking persists, the igniter itself needs replacement.
Uneven baking usually points to a failing bake or broil element (one side heating more than the other), a malfunctioning convection fan, or a temperature sensor reading incorrectly. A worn door gasket that lets heat escape also causes hot spots. A technician tests each component and replaces the one that's out of spec.
An oven door that won't stay closed is almost always a worn or torn door gasket or a broken door hinge. A poor seal lets heat escape, forces the oven to work harder, and causes uneven baking. Gasket and hinge replacement are both straightforward repairs done in a single visit.

Yes. Same-day oven and stove repair is available across most of Orange County when you call before noon. A broken oven or stove makes cooking impossible. We prioritize kitchen appliances. Call (949) 629-5365 to check today's availability.
Ovens and ranges last 15–20 years. If yours is under 12 years old and the repair is under half the cost of replacement, fix it. For premium brands (Viking, Wolf, Thermador), repair makes sense up to 20 years given the high cost of new units. Common repairs (bake element, igniter, temperature sensor) are well under the replacement threshold. We give you an honest quote before any work starts.
